It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Aurea Esther Irizarry on October 16, 2025. Born in Arecibo, Puerto Rico on March 13, 1947, Aurea was a radiant beacon of love, grace, and compassion. Her name, derived from the Latin word for "golden," was reflected in her brilliantly shining spirit that touched everyone she met. As the poet Maya Angelou once said, "People will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel". Aurea's love and kindness were unforgettable.
For 19 years, Aurea made New Bedford, Massachusetts her home. Despite never having been formally employed, she dedicated her life to serving others, creating a ripple effect of love that extended far beyond her immediate circle. Aurea was an exceptional woman who believed in the power of kindness. It was in the simplicity and quietness of her life that her true strength was revealed. Aurea was never married, but she was the embodiment of unconditional love and acceptance. It is often said that "the heart that loves is forever young". This embodied Aurea's life, she loved deeply and thus remained forever young at heart.
Aurea is survived by her loving children. She is preceded in death by her father Octavio Irizarry, and her mother Generosa. Her life was a testament to the power of love and kindness, and she will be deeply missed by all who were fortunate enough to have known her. "Love as powerful as your mother's for you leaves its own mark...to have been loved so deeply...will give us some protection forever." - J.K. Rowling. Aurea's love indeed left an indelible mark on our hearts and will continue to protect and guide us.
