Charles Lomer Szulewski, age 71, of Fall River, MA, passed away on July 25, 2025. He was born in Fall River on April 24, 1954, to the late Charles John and Evelyn (Lomer) Szulewski.

"Chuck" was a graduate of Bishop Connolly High School and went on to attend Mount Ida College, where he completed his education in Mortuary Science. He married Dorothy Ann (Verville) on May 14, 1976, in Fall River. They were married for 34 years at the time of her death on January 4, 2011. Together, they had two children: a daughter, Geneva Rose Halloran of Belmont, and a son, Charles John Szulewski II of Haverhill.

Chuck held several jobs throughout his life but was best known for his role as a Funeral Director at Szulewski/Niagara Funeral Home, eventually taking over the family business founded by his parents. In his younger days, he also worked as a painter for the Fall River Housing Authority and generously shared his extensive painting knowledge with his family and anyone who sought his guidance.

He was an active member of the community throughout much of his life. Chuck served as a member of the Fall River Lions Club and could often be found helping with various events at Sts. Peter and Paul School, where his children attended, and at Holy Cross Church, where he had been a communicant for many years. Notably, in the early 1990s, Chuck was appointed to direct the Fall River Civil Defense. Under his leadership, the department grew and was rebranded as the Fall River Emergency Management Agency (FREMA), recruiting a robust team of volunteers and providing countless hours of auxiliary support to the police and fire departments. Memorable efforts include FREMA volunteers braving the blizzard of 1993 to pick up individuals at risk and bring them to shelters, as well as coordinating the assembly and delivery of hundreds of meal kits to those affected by the storm.

Chuck had a passion for fishing—whether freshwater, ice, deep-sea, or fly-fishing—and was also an avid hunter. He loved his "toys" such as ATVs, dirt bikes, and motorcycles, and he took pride in his many DIY projects around the house.

He is survived by his children, Geneva (husband Christopher Halloran) and Charles (wife Caroline Jones); grandchildren, Draco, Mason, Brynn, Archer, and Casimir; sister, Kathleen (husband Joseph Cabral); brother, Robert; cherished nephews, Joseph and Joshua; and many other nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.

In keeping with his final wishes, funeral services were held privately on August 4 at Southcoast-Boyko Funeral Home, and he was laid to eternal rest alongside his beloved wife, Dottie, in Notre Dame Cemetery.

As Chuck loved the outdoors and his family, his children ask that you honor his memory by spending time in nature with your loved ones, and request that any charitable donations be made to the National Forest Foundation.
