John Peter “Jack” Fraunfelder was born on January 13, 1942 in Bethlehem, PA at St. Lukes Hospital. He grew up in nearby Nazareth, PA, where he played trombone, basketball, and starred in track and field. His father was the town doctor and a longtime Director at the Nazareth National Bank. His mother ran the local library and the church choir, and he grew up speaking Pennsylvania Dutch with his large extended family. Every year his parents would take him on a trip somewhere new, traveling much of the world, often by train and boat.

Jack studied biology at Muhlenberg College and medicine at Thomas Jefferson University, then served for 5 years as a Navy physician in Newport, RI and Jacksonville, FL. In 1970 he married the love of his life, Barbara Jean Mack. After his navy service, they started their family in Philadelphia and then moved into an 18th century home on the town common in Walpole, NH where they would raise their 3 children: Kate, Sarah, and Ian, along with 2 sheepdogs, 8 Newfoundlands, 17 cats, and more than a few rabbits, hamsters, and horses.

For 30 years Jack worked at the Cheshire Medical Center in Keene, NH, where he was a radiology-oncologist. He diagnosed broken bones from the ER, and supervised radiation therapy for hundreds of cancer patients. Everyone who worked with him admired the kindness, skill, and careful judgement that he brought to every patient.

In his spare time, he had one priority - family. He loved New England and found endless enjoyment having quiet family time skiing in the Vermont mountains, and summering at the beach in Maine and Nantucket.

Jack was an avid runner, biker, and sailor, and for many years he competed for the top 65+ 5k time among the Brant Point runners. He loved trains, old Land Rovers, Leica cameras, Filson jackets, and improbably - bluegrass music. He wore Vermont plaids for dress up, Nantucket reds for cocktail hour, and had a top hat that would appear every Halloween, Christmas, and New Years. He was known to break out puns and a moments notice and write haikus for big occasions. On his 40th birthday, Garrison Keeler sent him on-air greetings with an irreverent Irish message from his friends: "pogue mahone!".

He was famous for his morning pancakes, his leftover stirfries, and his ability to turn any occasion into a lobster feast. He always welcomed a full house and loved nothing better than a full dinner table that stayed long into the night. He was known to rearrange the dishwasher after others had loaded it, and everyone knew to never leave an empty slot! He had an affinity for architecture and had great joy late in life designing and building his “perfect home” on the coast in South Dartmouth, Ma.

Everyone who ever met Jack Fraunfelder saw him the same way - one of the nicest, most trustworthy, most down-to-earth people they had ever met. He stood out for his unique blend of high standards and easy-going attention to others. His grandchildren and all of their friends knew him as "PopJack." He was a steady, attentive, warm presence in their lives, and they will all remember his big hugs and the constant smile behind his white beard.

Jack leaves a big, busy legacy in his family. He is survived by his wife Barbara, his children Kate, Sarah and Ian, their partners Kevin, Mark, and Jenna, and an amazing pack of grandkids: Jack, Audrey, and Bennett Kertscher, and Drew and Nolan Fraunfelder.
