Dr. John
Fraunfelder, M.D.
Jan 13, 1942 — Sep 16, 2026
Dartmouth, MA
John Peter Fraunfelder was born January 13, 1942, at St. Luke's Hospital in Bethlehem, PA. He was the son of John Aaron Fraunfelder and Mae Yeisley Fraunfelder. He grew up in Nazareth, PA, where both his father and grandfather practiced medicine, making him the third Dr. Fraunfelder in his family.
Jack graduated from Muhlenberg College in 1963 and received his MD degree from Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia in 1967. He did his internship and medical residency at St. Luke’s, and then served in the United States Navy for two years as a general medical officer, first with a destroyer squadron and then at the Naval Air Technical Training Center in Jacksonville, FL.
He married Barbara Jean Mack on December 27, 1969. After his navy service, they started their family in Philadelphia, where he did his residency in radiology at Pennsylvania Hospital. In 1974 he began his career as a diagnostic radiologist and radiation oncologist at Cheshire Medical Center in Keene, NH, where he practiced for 25 years.
Jack and Barbara lived in Walpole, NH, for 47 years. Their three children, Kate, Sarah, and Ian, grew up there in a house built in 1811 on the town common that previously had been The Old Colony Inn. Sheepdogs, Newfoundlands, cats, rabbits, hamsters, and horses were all part of the family.
In his spare time, his top priority was always family. He was an enthusiastic horse show dad and spent untold hours and traveled many miles to watch his children and grandchildren in soccer and hockey games, track meets, plays and musical performances, and anything else they were involved with. He became a real New Englander and found endless enjoyment skiing in the Vermont mountains in winter, where he stacked firewood with precision and kept the fire going in the big stone fireplace when everyone gathered at Bolton Valley during snowy winters. He loved spending summers by the ocean, first in Maine and for the last 23 years on Nantucket. His black Land Rover was a fixture on the island and was known as the PopJaxi, as he shuttled family and friends to and from the ferry or went beach driving to Great Point and Coatue.
Jack was an avid runner, biker, and sailor, and for many years he competed for the top 65+ 5k time among the Brant Point runners on Nantucket. He loved trains, old Land Rovers, Leica cameras, Filson jackets, and, improbably, bluegrass and Irish music. He wore Vermont plaids for dress up, Nantucket reds for cocktail hour, had a top hat that would appear every Halloween, Christmas, and New Year's, and a lobster-claw belt buckle that he wore for all occasions. He was known to break out puns at a moment's notice and write haikus for big occasions. On his 40th birthday, Garrison Keeler sent him on-air greetings with an irreverent Irish message from his friends: "pogue mahone!".
He was famous for his morning blueberry pancakes (with real maple syrup), his leftover stir-fries, and his ability to turn any occasion into a seafood feast. He always welcomed a full house and loved nothing better than a full dinner table where people stayed long into the evening. He was known to rearrange the dishwasher after others had loaded it, and everyone knew to never leave an empty slot! He had an affinity for architecture and had great joy later in life designing and building his perfect home on the coast in South Dartmouth, MA.
Everyone who ever met Jack Fraunfelder saw him the same way: one of the nicest, most trustworthy, most down-to-earth people they had ever met. He stood out for his unique blend of high standards and easy-going attention to others. His grandchildren and all of their friends knew him as PopJack, and they all have favorite PopJack stories. He was a steady, attentive, warm presence in their lives, and they will all remember his big hugs and the constant smile behind his white beard.
Jack leaves a big, busy legacy in his family. He is survived by his wife Barbara, his children Kate, Sarah, and Ian, their partners Kevin, Mark, and Jenna, and an amazing pack of grandkids: Jack, Audrey, and Bennett Kertscher, and Drew and Nolan Fraunfelder.
He died peacefully, with family by his side, after a brief illness. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine or to any animal rescue organization would be welcome.
