We remember the life of João Barbosa, a beloved father, husband, grandfather, and a master of his craft. Born on October 15, 1943, in Ponta Delgada, Açores, Portugal, João carried the spirit of his homeland with him, illuminating every canvas he touched and every life he encountered. He passed away on August 30, 2026, leaving behind a vibrant legacy that will continue to inspire generations.
João, a renowned painter, spent his working years in a shipyard, but his true canvas extended far beyond his professional commitments. His love for painting was matched only by his passion for fishing and his dedication to his cherished family. As Pablo Picasso once said, "The purpose of art is washing the dust of daily life off our souls." João's art and love for life did just that, not only for him but for everyone fortunate enough to witness his craft. His works, like his life, were colorful, thoughtful, and filled with an undeniable love for the natural world.
João is survived by his loving wife, Rosa Barbosa, and their children, Mario Barbosa, Roger Barbosa and his wife Stephanie, and Chris Barbosa. He was a proud grandfather to Justin, Corey, Nathan, Brandon, and Ava Barbosa, and a great-grandfather to many. João also leaves behind his siblings Fernanda Pereira, Lucia Barbosa, Mário Barbosa, and José Barbosa.
He joins his parents, the late João Barbosa, and Olivia Machado Barbosa, as well as his siblings who predeceased him, Palmira Medeiros, Julieta Barbosa, and Espírito Santo, in eternal rest.
Family and friends are invited to gather in celebration of João's life on Saturday, September 5th, 2026, at 8:30 am inside the Ferreira Chapel at Southcoast Funeral Homes, 1555 Pleasant Street, Fall River, Massachusetts. The Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 10:00 am at Espirito Santo Catholic Church presided over by Fr. Jack Oliveira, 311 Alden Street, Fall River, Massachusetts. The committal service will occur at 11:00 am at Notre Dame Cemetery and Mausoleums, 1540 Stafford Road, Fall River, Massachusetts.
The funeral home offers a lighted parking lot which is available on the corner of Boutwell and Pleasant Street, (opposite corner of the funeral home) and our facility has a handicap-accessible ramp and entrance.
To celebrate João's life filled with love, art, and family, we encourage friends and family to share your cherished memories, stories, and photos of João on the memorial page. Your contributions will serve as comforting reminders of the unique spirit that João was and will continue to be in our hearts.
