We are gathered here to celebrate the life of Joao Melo, a man of great strength, intelligence, and warmth. Born in Lisbon, Portugal on the 25th of December 1952, Joao's journey brought him to Fall River, Massachusetts. It was here that he carved out a life full of love, laughter, and endless memories. His life was a testament to the sentiment echoed by Albert Einstein, "Try not to become a man of success, but rather try to become a man of value". Joao was not just a man of value to his family but to his community as well, he was a beacon of resilience and determination, illuminating the path for those around him.

Joao was an accountant by profession, but his true wealth was measured by the relationships he nurtured and cherished throughout his life. He was a dedicated husband to Mary Cordeiro. His love for his wife was an epitome of a storybook romance, filled with shared dreams, laughter, and understanding. He was a hard-working man, who dedicated his life to his profession, but his heart to his family and friends.

Joao enjoyed being at the beach and the great outdoors, spending his weekends on road trips to New Hampshire, Maine or the cape, and visits to Florida every year. He enjoyed taking his youngest son Logan skateboarding and fishing. He loved telling stories, especially stories of his childhood and growing up in Africa. He took one day at a time and never wanted to rush life or his day. He drove extremely slow on his days off because he always said people spend too much time rushing all week long to go to work. Joao was a true New Englander and loved the Red Sox, Patriots and the Bruins. But he still stuck with his Portuguese roots and was a lifelong soccer fan, Sporting CP was his favorite team.

Joao was predeceased by his father, Joaquim Melo and his mother, Fernanda Melo. Despite their absence, their teachings and values lived on through Joao. He wore his heritage like a badge of honor, never forgetting his roots and always proud of his journey.

Joao was loved by all that knew him and he would do anything to make people happy. Always down to Earth. He was hardworking, but still made time to spend with his family.

Besides his wife Mary he is survived by his children, Jennifer Lavoie and husband Andrew Lavoie of Acushnet, Brian Teixeira and fiancé Nikita Dupree of Fall River, Ruben Melo and fiancé Lorraine Smith of London, Igor Melo of London, Erica Laprise and husband Mike of North Adams, Ivan Melo of Lisbon and Logan Melo of Fall River. His grandchildren Avaree, TJ, Jacob, Kilei, Chayce, Dean Michael, Devin, Riley, Abygail, Sophia, Austin, Keegan and Ella.

He also leaves behind two great grandsons and one great granddaughter, as well as his loving nephew Kevin Papoula of Fall River.

We will be honoring Joao's life on Saturday, July 26, 2025, from 12:00 PM - 03:00 PM at the Southcoast Funeral Home, located at 1555 Pleasant Street, Fall River, Massachusetts, 02723. A Celebration of his life will be at 03:00 PM inside of the funeral home presided over by Chaplain and Life Celebrant Ines Bates.
