Joel Mario Costa, 73, of Portsmouth, RI, passed away peacefully on Thursday, February 6, 2025. A man of remarkable intelligence, creativity, and resilience, Joel touched the lives of many with his kindness, generosity, and unwavering determination.
Born on August 27, 1951, in São Miguel, Azores, Joel was the son of the late Jose Da Costa Jr. and Belmira Conceicao Da Costa.
He proudly served his country in the United States Navy from 1971 to 1974, embodying the values of service and dedication that he carried throughout his life. Joel built a distinguished 40-year career as an electrical engineer, most recently employed as a subcontractor with MIT Lincoln Laboratory. His colleagues admired his innovative approach to problem-solving, steadfast dedication, and passion for his work. A lifelong seeker of knowledge, he never shied away from a challenge and continually pursued opportunities for learning and growth. Beyond his professional achievements, Joel was a man of great heart. He found joy in helping others and always placed the needs of those around him before his own. He will be remembered for his generosity, wisdom, and the profound impact he had on his family and friends.
Joel is survived by his wife, Kathleen Costa of Portsmouth, RI; his son, Justin Costa, and daughter in law Stephanie Costa of Pembroke, MA; and his brother, Joseph Costa of Tiverton, RI.
While he is no longer with us, his spirit lives on in the cherished memories of those who knew and loved him.

As we mourn his passing, we also celebrate the extraordinary life he lived and wish him safe passage on his next journey. He will be dearly missed but never forgotten.
