Obituary

It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of Jose Maria Pires, a beloved father, and an accomplished journalist and photographer.

Born on August 5, 1949, in the quaint town of Nossa Senhora Da Graca, Praia, Cape Verde.

Jose brought his vibrant spirit and a lens of creativity to Boston, Massachusetts, where he resided. A man of integrity and passion, Jose spent his life capturing the world's beauty and truth through his words and images, leaving a lasting legacy on the media landscape. As the American author and journalist, Ernest Hemingway once said, "Every man's life ends the same way. It is only the details of how he lived and how he died that distinguish one man from another."

Jose lived a life of distinction, earning respect and recognition for his journalistic prowess and eye for photography. He spent his professional life seeking stories that mattered, using his pen and camera as tools of enlightenment and change. His work was not merely a job; it was a manifestation of his deep-seated belief in the power of storytelling and the importance of bearing witness to the world's events. His passion for his work was only surpassed by his love for his family. Despite his busy schedule, Jose always made time for his beloved family.

He is preceded in death by his loving parents, Eusebia Pires and Joao Maria. As we mourn the loss of Jose, we are reminded of a quote by photographer Aaron Siskind, "Photography is a way of feeling, of touching, of loving. What you have caught on film is captured forever… It remembers little things, long after you have forgotten everything."

Public visitation will be held on Saturday, 21 Jun 2025 from 04:00 PM - 08:00 PM at Saint Patrick's Church, 400 Dudley Street, Boston, Massachusetts, 02119. During this time, we invite those who knew and loved Jose to come together in honoring his life and legacy.

In the celebration of Jose's life, we encourage all who knew him to share their memories and upload photos to the memorial page. Let us remember Jose not only for the incredible individual he was, but also for the indelible mark he left on the hearts of those who knew him. May his life continue to inspire us to live with passion, courage, and an unwavering commitment to truth.
