It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Kathleen M. Smith (Costello) age 69, who passed away peacefully on Sunday August 3, 2025 at home with her loving daughter by her side. Born on October 1, 1955 in Niskayuna, NY She was the beloved mother of Laurel Smith and her dog Sammy. Kathy was predeceased by her longtime partner Patricia Murphy in 2018.

Kathy moved to Cape Cod at the age of 10 following the passing of her father Thomas J. Costello Jr., where she resided until her passing. Kathy graduated Barnstable Highschool in June 1974. After high school, she worked as a CNA for a short time. Later on she met and had the opportunity to work under Emeril Lagasse (before he became so famous) at the Dunfey's Hyannis Resort now the Four Seasons Resort. In 2002 she completed Project Forward a 2 yr program through Cape Cod Community College studying Hospitality and Culinary Arts. She became the valedictorian of her class. Following her graduation, she returned to the college as a part time professor for a few semesters followed by working at the EBB Tide Restaurant in Dennisport during the summer. She was very passionate about cooking and baking. You could always find her in the kitchen whipping something up special, especially at Christmas, as it was her favorite holiday. She always had a way of making the holidays special for everyone around her, particularly for children. She had a fascination with snowmen and had plenty of them to decorate the house with as her collection grew every year.

She enjoyed a wide variety of music. Neighbors could always hear music coming from her apartment as she often listened to music while she worked around the house. She loved to entertain and be around those she adored.

Kathy loved animals as she had numerous pets over the years and spoiled them any chance she could get.

Kathy was a courageous woman with a heart of gold. She empathized with others, never judgmental, always accepting. She was loud and stubborn and down right cantankerous at times, but she definitely knew how to make her presence known and a lasting impression. She always had a smile on her face. Her sense of humor was uncanny and always had everyone laughing. Never wanting to be a burden to anyone, particularly her daughter.

Kathy's memory will be kept alive by her devoted daughter and all who knew her through fond memories and stories as she was such a remarkable woman. She will be deeply missed.

Kathy was always proud of her Irish heritage and below is Kathy's favorite Irish prayer:

"May the road rise to meet you, may the wind be always at your back, may the sun shine warm upon your face, and the rains fall soft upon your fields. And until we meet again, may God hold you in the palm of His hand"
