Obituary

Ricardo Nunes Alcobia, aka "Dick" age 88 years passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family and friends after a long hard fought battle with Cancer on May 14,2025, leaving a profound impact on all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Born on August 9th 1936 in New Bedford, Dick spent his entire life in his beloved city fostering deep rooted connections with its people and culture. Dick's life was characterized by an extraordinary level of hard work, dedication and loyalty. He worked the waterfront for many years as a longshoreman before establishing multiple businesses in his beloved city but his final pride and joy, the National Club, quickly became a cornerstone of the local community. His devotion to his city was reflected in his business which was much more than a place of commerce, but a safe hub of community spirit where all were welcomed without judgment.

For many of the local fishermen a place they considered a home. A true testament to the power of his kindness and empathy. Dick "retired" at the age of 67 starting his new career as a school bus driver for Amaral's Bus Company, a job he truly loved and he did joyfully full time up until 2 months shy of his 87th birthday. Oftentimes he could be heard singing on the 1st day of school full of excitement to be back to work.

He was a man who put others before himself, always ready to lend a helping hand, listen to a friend in need or share a word of encouragement. His life was well lived, a beautiful journey filled with adventures, love, laughs and kindness. His memory will continue to inspire and guide all those who were blessed to know him.

Dick is survived by wife Katherine Alcobia with whom he shared 45 years, their love story was one of shared dreams and an unshakable bond. His chosen family/best friends Chucky and Madelyn Soares of New Bedford, MA, his 6 children, Karen Dean of Tavares FL, Ricardo Nunes Alcobia Jr of Sanford FL, Tabitha Tanner of Williston N. Dakota, Mark Ramos of New Bedford MA, Maureen Dane of Warwick RI, Stacy Breton and her husband Shawn of New Bedford MA.
